The previous post made a strong case for healthcare SEO as a long-term patient acquisition channel. Every word of it stands. But long-term is doing a lot of work in that sentence, and for a practice that needs patients now, not in twelve months, that distinction matters considerably.

Healthcare PPC (pay-per-click advertising, primarily through Google Ads) is the complement to organic search, not the alternative. Where SEO builds a compounding asset over time, PPC delivers visibility immediately. Where organic rankings take months to establish, a well-structured PPC campaign can be generating enquiries within days of launch. For practices with specific short-term goals, new service launches, seasonal demand, or a patient pipeline that needs filling faster than organic growth allows, PPC provides the lever that SEO can’t.

    How Healthcare PPC Works

Search advertising in healthcare places a practice’s ad at the top of the search results page when a patient searches a relevant term. The practice pays when a patient clicks the ad, not when it’s displayed. The position of the ad is determined by a combination of the bid (how much the practice is willing to pay per click) and the quality score (how relevant the ad and landing page are to the search query).

The mechanics matter because they shape both the cost and the effectiveness of the campaign. A well-structured campaign with highly relevant ad copy and landing pages pays less per click than a poorly structured one for the same position, because Google rewards relevance. This means that PPC competence isn’t just about budget. It’s about how intelligently the campaign is built and managed.

Healthcare search terms vary considerably in cost per click. Competitive speciality terms in major cities can attract significant bids from multiple practices. Less competitive specialities or geographic areas produce much lower costs. Understanding the cost landscape before committing to a budget is part of a well-informed approach to healthcare PPC.

    The Speed Advantage

The fundamental advantage of PPC over organic search is speed. A practice launching a new service, opening a new location, or recovering from a period of reduced patient numbers doesn’t have the luxury of waiting six to twelve months for organic rankings to develop. PPC puts the practice in front of searching patients immediately.

This speed advantage is particularly valuable at specific moments in a practice’s development. A new specialist joining the team, a treatment becoming available that wasn’t offered before, or a practice expanding into a new area of medicine all represent patient acquisition opportunities that benefit from immediate visibility. Building organic visibility for these over time makes sense as a long-term strategy. Capturing the immediate opportunity requires paid search.

The speed argument also applies to testing. PPC generates data quickly: which search terms are driving enquiries, what ad copy converts, which landing pages are performing. This data is valuable not just for the PPC campaign but for informing the content and positioning of the organic search strategy. Running PPC while SEO develops is not just a way to bridge the gap. It’s a way to gather intelligence that makes the organic strategy more effective.

What Healthcare PPC Requires to Work

The most common reason healthcare PPC disappoints is not inadequate spend. It’s inadequate structure. Campaigns built around broad, expensive keywords rather than specific clinical terms waste budget on clicks from patients who aren’t looking for what the practice offers. Landing pages that don’t match the ad copy lose patients who clicked with genuine intent. Conversion tracking that doesn’t connect clicks to actual enquiries makes it impossible to know what’s working.

Getting these elements right requires both healthcare knowledge and PPC expertise. A campaign built around clinical terminology that patients actually use, with ad copy that speaks to their specific concerns rather than generic service descriptions, and landing pages that deliver on the ad’s promise and make the next step obvious will outperform a generically built campaign at every budget level.

The regulatory dimension matters in healthcare PPC as much as in content. Google’s policies on healthcare advertising have specific requirements, and ads making unsupported claims about treatments or outcomes can be disapproved or trigger account issues. A practitioner with healthcare-specific PPC experience builds campaigns within these requirements as a matter of course.

    The Budget Question

Healthcare PPC requires a realistic budget to function effectively. Underfunding a PPC campaign in a competitive speciality produces a situation where the budget runs out before meaningful data accumulates, making it impossible to optimise. The right budget depends on the speciality, the geography, and the volume of enquiries the practice is trying to generate, and it should be set based on an understanding of the cost-per-click landscape rather than an arbitrary figure.

The way to think about budget is in terms of cost per patient acquired. If a click costs a certain amount, and the landing page converts at a certain rate, the cost per enquiry can be calculated. If the practice’s patient lifetime value justifies that cost per enquiry, the campaign is economically viable. This arithmetic should be done before significant spend is committed, not after.

    PPC and SEO Together

The strongest patient acquisition programmes use PPC and SEO in combination rather than choosing between them. PPC provides immediate visibility and fills the gap while organic rankings develop. SEO builds the long-term asset that reduces dependence on paid spend. PPC data informs the organic strategy. And together, the two channels provide visibility across the search results page that neither achieves alone.

Practices that run both well capture patients at multiple points in the search experience: paid positions at the top, the local map pack, and the organic results below. That breadth of presence, on terms where genuine patient intent exists, is what consistent patient acquisition from search looks like.
