As the capital city of England, London is a popular tourist destination and business destination alike. The centre of London is always heaving and full of people, and there’s always something to do. While it’s a bit more expensive than staying in other cities or areas in the UK, it’s definitely worth going to London for a visit, even if it’s just for a day or a weekend.

But because there’s so much to do in London, you don’t want to go without any planning. So here are a few tips to help people plan their next trip to London and make sure it’s a trip to remember.

    Packing for Your Trip

If you’re only going to London for a day trip, you don’t need to pack anything at all. But if you’re going for a short break, you will have to think about a few things, including clothes, chargers, and medication.

Generally, packing for a city break doesn’t take a lot, especially if you don’t have to leave the country. But it’s worth thinking about what the weather will be like and what you will do while you’re there.

For walking around, you will want comfortable shoes and clothes that are appropriate for the weather. You can dress relatively casually, but it can be nice to dress up in London as long as you aren’t uncomfortable. A suede jacket is a great compromise between comfort and style, because it will keep you warm and look good.

You might also want to pack more formal or flashy clothes if you plan on going to any shows, eating in fancy restaurants, or hitting the London nightlife.

    Getting to London

If you live outside of London, one consideration should be how you travel in. You can always drive into London, especially if you’re not far away, but this isn’t often the best choice.

Parking and driving in London can be an absolute nightmare, even if you do it often. Parking is painfully rare and expensive unless it happens to be part of your accommodation. Even if you can drive and park at your accommodation, that doesn’t mean you can easily drive around London.

It’s often easier to get a train, plane, or even a bus to London. A lot of major lines either go through or end in London, and you can then get more public transport to your accommodation.

    Finding Accommodation

If you don’t have to travel far, you can absolutely travel in and out of London in the space of a day. This does save money on accommodation, but it massively cuts the amount of time you can spend in London short. It also makes it more difficult to enjoy the nightlife of London.

While it costs money, it’s quite easy to find accommodation in or near London. The further from the center of London you go, the cheaper it will be to stay. Make sure that you stay near transportation systems so it’s still easy to get around.

AirBnBs and similar properties are a good option if you want more privacy, but hotels can be more comfortable and glamorous.

    Traveling Around London

If you go to the shopping district of London, it’s definitely worth it to walk around the streets for a while, both to take in the sights of London and potentially spend some money. But what if you have heavy bags? In this case, find convenient places like Paddington luggage storage to store your luggage and other bags and keep them safe while you’re wandering around.

But London is a big place, and there’s only so far you can go on your feet. If you want to quickly tour the sights in the center of London, you can go on specific bus tours that take you around and allow you to get on and off when you want to explore for yourself. This is great for exploration and recommendations for where to go.

Otherwise, if you want to go somewhere specific quickly, you can’t beat the London subway. It’s crowded, but it’s the fastest and most convenient way to travel in London.

You can also use the famous London black cabs to get around, even late at night.

    Safety in London

As a capital city, London does come with some safety concerns. One of the most common issues in London in the past few years was phone theft and similar pickpocketing crimes. The London police have cracked down on these crimes, so they’re less common than they used to be, but it still pays to be aware.

Keep your phone in inner pockets and, if you have to use it, make sure that you’re close to the wall and facing away from the road where people can drive by and grab it.

It’s also a good idea to walk in brightly lit areas at night and, if possible, with other people, especially if you’ve been drinking. Taxis can be a safe way to travel longer distances.

    Booking Activities

There are loads that you can do in London without booking in advance, and there’s something to be said for being spontaneous, but it’s definitely worth it to explore some activities and shows well in advance.

The London West End is one of the most famous theatre scenes in the world, with loads of shows year-round. If you’re planning your trip in advance, you should check out what’s on while you’re in London and potentially catch a show.

You can also go to museums and galleries in London to see even more historic and cultural sights.

    Food and Drink

London has a famously fantastic food culture, so you should also check out where you can eat in advance. Some of the most highly rated places to eat in London are easy to just drop in and grab a table, but for some of the more upmarket restaurants, you need to book a table in advance. It’s definitely worth seeing what’s on offer in London.
